SERDANG, October 18 – Urban farming has emerged as an innovative approach that connects food security needs, community well-being, and environmental sustainability.
Head of the Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Dr Puteri Edaroyati Megat Wahab, explained during the forum titled “Urban Farming & Social Ecosystem: Community, Technology and Sustainability” that urban farming refers to agricultural activities carried out within or around city (urban) areas.
“Urban farming is not only about growing crops such as vegetables, herbs and fruits, but also about fostering social harmony and instilling sustainability values among urban communities,” she said.
According to her, UPM’s role in advancing urban farming covers multiple dimensions that support the national food security and sustainability agenda.
“UPM not only conducts research and development (R&D) in the field of urban farming but also shares its innovations and technologies with urban communities through various knowledge-transfer and hands-on training programmes,” she added.
These initiatives aim to strengthen urban communities’ knowledge and skills in cultivating crops sustainably, efficiently and in an eco-friendly manner.
Dr. Puteri Edaroyati also highlighted that participants in urban farming come from diverse backgrounds and walks of life.
“This inclusivity not only encourages community collaboration but also nurtures the spirit of gotong-royong (mutual cooperation) in managing their own community gardens,” she said.
