SERDANG, October 15 – The Faculty of Food Science and Technology (FSTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) strengthened its role in raising public awareness on the importance of food security through the organisation of Open Day @FoodTech UPM 2025, themed “Transforming Our Plates, Strengthening Food Security.”

The programme showcased a wide range of academic disciplines, research initiatives, and innovations in food science and technology to the public, school students, and industry partners—demonstrating UPM’s commitment to supporting the national food security agenda.

Dean of FSTM, Prof. Dr. Anis Shobirin Meor Hussin, said the event reflected the university’s mission not only to produce high-quality graduates but also to enhance the nation’s food system through innovation and strategic collaboration.

“As a faculty leading in food science and technology education, we believe transformation begins with awareness, creativity, and collaboration. Our research, innovations, and partnerships with industry strengthen the agricultural sector, empower communities, and build a more resilient food system for the nation,” he said.

The one-day programme also provided students with hands-on exposure to real-world applications of technology and research in the food industry. Activities included product innovation demonstrations, laboratory tours, and sharing sessions with researchers and industry alumni.

Umairah Maisarah Mohd Shaufi, 20, a Bachelor of Food Manufacturing Operations with Honours student, said the event offered valuable insight into industry realities and future career opportunities in the food sector.

“This programme opened my eyes to how innovation and technology are applied in actual food production processes.

It inspired me to explore research and product development in the future,” she said.

Open Day @FoodTech 2025 also served as a platform to strengthen university–community–industry relations while nurturing young people’s interest in food science and its vital role in ensuring a safe, nutritious, and sustainable national food supply.
